About Us
The Bachmann-Strauss Dystonia & Parkinson Foundation (BSDPF) was founded in 1995 as a nonprofit 501(c)3 by Louis Bachmann(1916-2000) and Bonnie Strauss. The Foundation was started to encourage new research and scientists in the fields of dystonia and Parkinson disease, and to heighten awareness about the diseases. (Read More)

On Sunday, May 19th, The New York Times published an Op-Ed entitled "Disease and the Public Eye" by the Chair of our Foundation's Young Leadership Council, Allison London. This amazing piece really hits home for everyone living with dystonis - whether affected directly or indirectly. Meet our Junior Spokeperson - Jake Silverman
Jake Silverman is a Millburn High School junior who enjoys boating, fishing, biking, the New York Yankees, and ice cream. At the age of ten, he was diagnosed with early onset dystonia. After failed attempts to control Jake's disorder with medication, he underwent Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery in 2008. New Discovery of a Mutation in the DYT4 Gene
The Bachmann-Strauss Foundation's 2011 grant recipient Christine Klein, MD, Professor of Neurology and the Schilling Professor of Clinical and Molecular Neurogenetics at the University of Lübeck, Germany, has identified the mutation in the DYT4, a dominantly inherited form of spasmodic dysphonia.

New Gene Discovered for Dystonia!
The Bachmann-Strauss Dystonia & Parkinson Foundation is proud to be a part of something this monumental in the dystonia community! After funding a research study led by Laurie Ozelius, PhD, Associate Professor in the Department of Genetics and Genomic Sciences at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, an amazing discovery was made! "The discovery identifies the human G α olf (GNAL) gene, the first PTD gene that directly points to the dopamine signal transduction system as the origin of pathophysiology. The research provides the potential opportunity for developing new treatments, and prenatal screening tests."
